A Natural Look Doesn't Always Mean Less Makeup

A common misconception of a "natural look" makeup, is that you wear less makeup. And while this can be true in some cases, it isn't in others. All the same steps are taken to create a natural or neutral look, but the application technique and the shades used are cleverly and carefully chosen.
It's also a common misconception that a natural look makeup takes less time, or is "easier" and therefore, should cost less. I can tell you from experience, that making your model or bride appear healthy, with all the right shading, depth and highlight to their skin, is just as much of a skill as slapping on layers of deep colour tone for a more glam finish. There's nothing to hide behind in terms of dark shades. And if your client has tricky skin, or suffers with any conditions like acne or eczema - this is even harder to give them a skin finish that appears glowing and healthy, as heavy coverage isn't preferable when trying to create this look. There are so many factors to consider, and skin prep is EVERYTHING!
Too often do I hear the phrase
I only want a natural makeup, I don't wear much...

My first feeling when I read this, is that the person making the enquiry, expects this is an easier job for me, therefore should take less time, meaning less cost. Wrong. I know makeup artists that have admitted to me that they don't know how to create this look - or aren't confident in it, as full glam is their speciality, and so don't often have the opportunity to perfect it.
I have my commercial and fashion work to thank for this, as the industry often calls for this "no makeup makeup" look, that I've become so well rehearsed at. And this is exactly why I feel that choosing your makeup artist wisely, based on their portfolio and style is SO important.
So next time you're seeking out a makeup artist for your event or wedding, please consider that a natural look doesn't mean less skill or experience. It's very much the same, but different.
