Why I don't go deep on skincare advise

Updated: Feb 13

...or at least why I don't claim to be a skincare expert. I of course have a general knowledge of skincare, I have to for what I do. However, I'm in the full belief that being able to responsibly advise on skincare is a whole industry in itself.

I get nervous making claims and suggestions about skincare with confidence, because if your skin is anything like mine, it can be super reactive. For example, I've recently tried a budget toner from Aldi that claims to be amazing by so many, as it 's claimed to be a dupe of the Pixie Retinol toner - but I had an awful reaction from it. My face and neck broke out into a rash. BUT, this isn't to say that others will too. Everybody's skin, hormones and bodies are different and can react extremely differently to different ingredients. Which is exactly why I don't believe I am in a place of authority to advise, but am happy to make suggestions of products I've enjoyed based on my own experience, or based on the general rule of thumb of what result certain products can offer. Other than that, I tend to recommend seeing a dermatologist if you have any specific skin problems.

That said, I know which products and brands that work best for my skin, but in this line of work, it's important I try new products to see how they perform before I feel comfortable using them on my clients. So understand I will find myself in these situations at times, and will always be honest with the results I've experienced. And unfortunately, this hasn't been a positive one for me.

On the flip side of this, there is such a thing as called Skin Purging. This is when your skin might breakout, or you might experience a little redness or dryness. This is totally normal when introducing a new product to your routine, particularly if the product includes active ingredients. The "purge" can last up to 6 weeks, with the result essentially being clearer more even skin (or whatever job the product promises).

This, however, was not that. My skin felt tender, itchy and was more of a under the skin rash that ran down my neck (not entirely clear on the video). After a dose of antihistamines, my skin is definitely less angry and know will get it back to health in no time - by rolling my routine back to basics for a few days. Check out the video below!
